The First D.O.C. Syrah in Italy
The first intuition about syrah's potential at the Tenimenti Luigi D'Alessandro estate, came from Attilio Scienza, one of the greatest Italian viticulture experts. Thanks to his consulting, a five hectare experimental vineyard was planted in 1988 to verify syrah's compatibility on the property. During this time, comprehensive zoning studies were carried out (studies of the stratification of different plots, the climate, the first micro-vinifications of various vines, etc). In the vineyard root stocks were planted along with numerous clones of high quality vines (from sangiovese to cabernet, from merlot to syrah). The following tests and experiments were an overall confirmation: syrah expressed the greatest rapport between terroir and vine.
